On December 24, 2012, the president of Russia appointed Major-General Aleksandr Golovko the commander of the Air and Space Defense Forces. His predecessor, Oleg Ostapenko, was promoted to the deputy minister of defense. Ostapenko served as the commander of Space Forces since July 2008 and was the first commander of the Air and Space Defense Forces when the new branch was created in December 2011.
