On 19 February 2022 Russian armed forces conducted an exercise that involved a series of launches of strategic delivery systems. This exercise traditionally takes place in the fall, but it was moved to December in 2020 and to February next year in 2021.

According to the Chief of the General Staff, the main goal of the exercise was to "work out procedures that allow strategic offensive forces to deliver guaranteed defeat to an adversary." The exercise was conducted in two stages. The first one was to "work out procedures that use weapons of potentially elevated danger (sic!)." The second one was aimed at testing procedures for "sanctioning and large-scale employment of strategic offensive forces in a strike from under attack [otvetno-vstrechnyy udar]." The exercise was conducted under command of the President of Russia.

The Strategic Rocket Forces conducted a launch of a Yars ICBM from a mobile launcher from the Plesetsk test site. Warheads of the missile successfully reached their targets at the Kura test site in Kamchatka.

Karelia submarine of the Project 667BDRM class successfully launched a Sineva SLBM from the Barents Sea to Kura.

The "strategic" part of the exercise also included launches of ALCMs conducted by Tu-95MS bombers toward test sites Pemboy and Kura.

In addition to these tests, the exercise included launches of a Kinzhal missile, launches of Kalibr missiles and of a Tsirkon missile from submarines of the Northern and Black Sea fleets. It also included a launch of an Iskander cruise missile at the Kapustin Yar test site.
