New strategic submarine of the Project 955 type

On March 19, 2004 the Northern Machine Building Plant (Sevmashpredpriyatiye) in Severodvinsk launched construction of a new strategic missile submarine of the Project 955 Borey type. The submarine, “Aleksandr Nevskiy”, will be the second submarine of this class. Construction of the first one – “Yuri Dolgorukiy”, began in November 1996. The submarines are expected to carry a new missile system, which will include solid-propellant Bulava missiles.
