On 29 June 2004, Russian armed forces conducted an exercise (Mobilnost-2004), which involved launches of sea-launched ballistic missile from a submarine, an air-based cruise missile. On the same day the Space Forces performed a commercial launch of a Dnepr space launcher (modified R-36M/SS-18 missile).
At 11:25 MSK on June 29, 2004, the “Ekaterinburg” submarine of the Project 667BDRM (Delta IV) type deployed at Barents Sea launched a R-29RM (SS-N-23) missile from a submerged position. The warheads reached their designated targets at the Kura test site at the Kamchatka peninsula 28 minutes later.
Another part of the exercise was a launch of an air-based cruise missile. The missile was launched from a Tu-95MS strategic bomber, about four hours after the bomber took off from its base in Engels. A cruise missile (presumably Kh-55/AS-15A) launched from the bomber reached its designated target at the Novaya Zemlya test site.
The space launch of the Dnepr launcher was performed at 10:30 MSK (09:30 DMV, 06:30 UTC) from a silo at Baykonur launch site. The launcher delivered eight small satellites into the low-earth orbit.
Comments
The launch from the Ekaterinburg submarine was the final launch of the test program of the new modification of the R-29RM missile (see here)
