What already appeared to be the largest strategic aviation exercise in the recent Russian history just keeps growing. "More than 30 bombers" conducted test flights on August 14, some of which were reported to involve cruise missile launches. The Air Force reports that "about 50 flights" will be conducted on August 17, 2007 as well. These numbers seem to include flights of non-strategic bombers and support aircraft.

Russia desperately needs additional flight hours for its aircraft crews. The number of training sorties a typical aircraft crew accrues in a year is well below Western standards. The Russian Air Force lags far behind the USAF in the use of simulators for training as well. If a Russian pilot isn’t in the air, his skills are atrophying. The recently announcement by President Putin that Russia intends to resume ongoing strategic bomber patrols may be a sign this trend is going to change. Or, at least, for the 37th Air Army.

Meanwhile, Putin announces-
"I have made a decision to resume regular flights of Russian strategic aviation"
and
"Starting today, such tours of duty would be conducted regularly and on the strategic scale. Our pilots have been grounded for too long, they are happy to start a new life."
