Areva and DOE signed an agreement to construct the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility at the Savannah River Site. The cost of the contract is $2.7 billion. The facility is part of the program that aims to dispose of 34 MT of weapon-grade plutonium that the United States declared excess to its national security needs. The MOX fuel manufactured at he facility would be used in commercial light-water power reactors.
According to World Nuclear News, "the Savannah River plant design is to be based on Areva reprocessing plant at La Hague and its Melox MOX fabrication plant. Similar facilities based on Areva designs are nearing completion at Rokkasho in Japan."
